How the Tanker works

The tanker which needs loading or unloading will moor on a buoy that is near the SPM. The mooring system is combined with a fluid transfer system that enables connection of subsea (beneath the sea surface) pipelines to the tanker.

The fluid transfer system is made of submarine hoses that go between the tanker and the buoy and then between a pipeline at the seabed (called a PLEM ‘Pipeline end manifold’) and the buoy.

The fluid is then fed through the pipe lines to its designated destination, in this case the Tank Farm on whiddy island. Whiddy island oil terminal is now used for the storage of oil in the 17 storage tanks situated on the island.
